Zion Williamson might be getting one step closer to suiting up for the Pelicans.
The young star hasn’t played at all this season. He underwent surgery to repair a fractured right foot during the offseason.
With so few games left in the regular season this year, it was previously believed the Pelicans would simply shut down Williamson for the duration of the season. However, New Orleans is currently in ninth place in the Western Conference standings. In other words, there’s still plenty to play for.
Interestingly enough, Williamson will be joining the Pelicans on their upcoming four-game road trip, per NBA insider Shams Charania.
Pelicans’ Zion Williamson traveled with the team to Portland on four-game road trip, sources tell me and @WillGuillory. It’s the first multi-game road trip Williamson has traveled on this season. Steps in right direction as he continues to progress but remains out indefinitely.

It’s still entirely plausible Zion Williamson doesn’t play for the rest of the season. But why bring him back now? Maybe he and the Pelicans want to give it a shot.
If Williamson were to return to the lineup the Pelicans would become a sneaky-dangerous team heading into the Western Conference Playoffs. A couple wins in the play-in tournament and they could get paired up with the second-place Memphis Grizzlies.
It’d certainly be fun to see Zion get back out on the court. For now, he’s simply joining the team for the road trip.
