It appears it is more subtle that some sold
One of the major storylines after the Las Vegas Raiders changed leadership once again this offseason was the role of Tom Brady, who became a minority owner of the franchise late last year.
There was a lot of media speculation that the legendary quarterback would have a major role within the Raiders’ front office and he would be a primary and leading decision maker.
Now, after the heavy-lifting period of the Brady’s first offseason with the franchise is complete, it may be time to revisit that thought.
Recently, new Raiders’ head coach Pete Carroll said that Brady is rarely at the team’s Henderson, Nevada facility, but the two do talk on the phone frequently.
This is another indication of what Brady’s true role in the day-to-day workings of the front office truly is. By all indications, it appears that Brady (who lives in Florida and has several other endeavors) is more of an active consultant for Carroll and new Las Vegas general manager John Spytek than a defined final decision maker.
Really, that is what Brady has hinted at all along and Spytek has indicated that is more of his role as well.
The team involves Brady in their planning, but it’s not like he is deeply involved in every move.
Yes, he was part of the hiring process of Carroll and Spytek and he was consulted when the team traded for Geno Smith. Remember, Brady was part of the pursuits of Ben Johnson as coach and Matthew Stafford as quarterback. He is around, but just not totally immersed every detail. His influence is probably more subtle than being a forced voice of power.
Brady himself said he wasn’t overly involved in the draft plan at quarterback. Yet, Spytek did say that Brady liked what he saw of sixth-round pick Cam Miller of North Dakota State. So, again, this is an indication of more of a consultant role than anything else.
And, frankly, it’s perfectly fine and expected that this is Brady’s current role. Really, that was plan all along, but perhaps the some in the media may have oversold his role with the team, at this point.
It wouldn’t be a surprise down the road that Brady becomes more and more involved with the inner-workings of the front office. But for now, that’s not where he is at.
But, as Carroll made clear, the GOAT is just a phone call away if needed. There’s nothing wrong with that approach.
