The first Sunday of the 2021 NFL Sunday took place one day after the 20th anniversary of 9/11. And the league was ready with a special national anthem to mark the occasion.
Emmy Award winning actor Steve Buscemi narrated the start of NFL’s presentation, talking about how the United States healed after the tragic events of that day. But when he was finished, singer Juliette Candela took center stage, and began singing the national anthem from the site of the World Trade Center in New York City.
It was a beautiful rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner, and was broadcast across all of the early NFL games. New York Jets head coach, whose brother was working in one of the Twin Towers on that fateful day but made it out, was visibly shaken by Candela’s performance.
The five-minute video has quickly gone viral, with plenty of NFL fans sharing the video and taking to the comments to express their delight at how Candela performed:
The tragic events of September 11th, 2001 devastated our country 20 years ago.
We remember those we lost and how we came together the day after the attacks, paving the way for healing and growth, followed by a special performance of our country’s National Anthem. pic.twitter.com/ZFqbmLIppG

“Anthem was amazing… best version I have ever heard…. Chills, tears and awe…. Great job NFL and Juliette Candela,” one fan replied.
“I cried little on how beautiful this was and let’s all come together,” another fan replied.
“She should be doing the Anthem for every stadium in every sport lol make another video of her doing the National Anthem. she sang that perfectly,” wrote another.
Fans clearly adored Juliette Candela’s rendition of the national anthem. Perhaps we’ll see her perform it again down the line.
