If you had any doubt that Ryan Fitzpatrick would be the starting quarterback for the Washington Football Team–and you shouldn’t have–the franchise removed it today.
Washington made it official today, via NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, that Fitzpatrick will be starting Week 1. It was clear once WFT signed the 38-year-old veteran back in March that they wanted Fitzpatrick to be QB1.
“This has been obvious by the way WFT preseason played out, though it was never announced,” Rapoport wrote.
One important QB note: The Washington Football Team will start QB Ryan Fitzpatrick in Week 1 and going forward, I’m told. This has been obvious by the way the WFT preseason played out, though it was never announced. But it will be Fitz under center.

In 165 career games, Fitzpatrick has passed for 34,977 yards, 223 touchdowns and 169 interceptions. He played in nine games and made seven starts for the Miami Dolphins in 2020, throwing for 2,091 yards, 13 touchdowns and eight picks.
Fitzpatrick will be supported this season by backups Taylor Heinicke and Kyle Allen. Allen started multiple games for Washington last season before breaking his leg, and Heinicke started the team’s Wild Card playoff game, performing admirably in a loss to the eventual Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Washington will open up the 2021 season at home against the Los Angeles Chargers at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, September 12.
