In-game interviews often go poorly and end quickly. Head coaches are too focused on the game to stop and offer insight during a pleasant conversation.
North Carolina coach Hubert Davis, however, manifested his energy into a terrific segment with TBS’s Tracy Wolfson during the first quarter of Monday’s national championship game against Kansas.
“We’re competing out there. It’s live action, Tracy. It’s live action out there,” an exuberated Davis said. “I thought we were nervous at the beginning, then we started to settle in. We got better defensively. Not we’re attacking the basket. We’re ready to go.”

He also said he’s “so proud” of Armando Bacot, who started for the Tar Heels despite suffering an ankle injury late in Saturday night’s win over Duke. Davis said having the junior forward at “52 percent” is “good news for Carolina basketball.”
Davis’ excitement might have channeled through his squad. After that interview, the Tar Heels went on a 16-4 run to build a double-digit lead over the top-seeded Jayhawks.
North Carolina enters halftime with a 40-25 edge. If Davis brings that same passion into the locker room during the intermission, the Tar Heels could be on the brink of capturing the national title.
