The Denver Broncos’ 2021 season ended in heartbreaking fashion against the rival Kansas City Chiefs yesterday. Though it may not have mattered one way or another for Vic Fangio as he was fired hours later.
On Sunday, the Broncos formally parted ways with Fangio after three years at the helm. Fangio went 19-30 as head coach and never had a winning season as head coach.
But Fangio is taking his dismissal from the team in stride. In a statement released this morning, Fangio thanked the Broncos for the opportunity to serve as their head coach. Fangio offered special thanks to former general manager John Elway and team president Joe Ellis for allowing him to be a part of the organization.
“It was an honor and privilege to serve as head coach of the Denver Broncos,” Fangio said. “I want to thank John Elway and Joe Ellis for giving me the opportunity to be part of this storied franchise and special community when they hired me three seasons ago. Over the past year, I am grateful to have been able to work with George Paton, one of — in my opinion — our league’s best General Managers. Broncos fans, you have a great one in George.”
“To the players, coaches and staff thank you for the fight and character you showed each and every week. No matter the adversity, circumstances or challenges we faced, you never backed down. I am proud to be associated with this group of fighters and competitors. I appreciate you all. To Broncos fans: Thank you for your support, passion and how much you care about the Broncos. You are the reason Denver is one of the NFL’s best football towns.
“The foundation is in place for this team to accomplish great things. The future is bright for the Denver Broncos, and I wish the organization nothing but the best.”

Vic Fangio rose to prominence as the defensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers between 2011 and 2018. But his experience as a football coach extends all the way to the late-1970s.
Fangio had some success bringing his superb defensive acumen with him to Denver. But he struggled to get things working on offense consistently.
The now-former Broncos head coach should have no trouble finding a landing spot if he plans to coach in 2022.
Where will Vic Fangio go next?
