Earlier this month, the New York Jets placed Alex Lewis on the exempt/left squad list after he sustained a head injury in practice. It turns out that was the last time Lewis would suit up for the team.
ESPN’s Rich Cimini is reporting that Lewis has retired. An official announcement hasn’t been made by Lewis, but that could be coming very soon.
“Alex Lewis has decided to retire, per source,” Cimini reported on Twitter. “Was eliminated from playing for any team in 2021 last week when Jets placed him on reserve/left squad list. In theory, could try comeback in ‘22, but it remains to be seen whether he has any desire to play again, source said.”
Lewis was selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He was traded to the Jets in 2019 in exchange for a conditional seventh-round pick.
In two seasons with the Jets, Lewis made 21 starts. Though he wasn’t considered an elite offensive guard, he was serviceable for both the Ravens and Jets.

Although it’s unfortunate that Lewis is retiring, the Jets should be just fine at offensive guard. The current depth chart features Alijah Vera-Tucker and Greg Van Roten as the starters.
The Jets are hopeful their offensive line can thoroughly protect rookie quarterback Zach Wilson this upcoming season.
