Veteran NFL Running Back Released On Monday Morning

May 2, 2022 by The Spun

The Atlanta Falcons made a move to clear some additional cap space to start the week. Per Boardroom’s Jordan Schultz, the team informed veteran running back Mike Davis that he will be released.

“Breaking,” Schultz tweeted. “Falcons are releasing RB Mike Davis.”

Noting, “Falcons saving $2.5M against cap by releasing Mike Davis — a proven RB whose had tons of success, particularly two seasons ago with the Panthers, when he had over 1k scrimmage yards and 8 TDs. Atlanta drafted BYU RB Tyler Allgeier in the 5th round.”

Davis appeared in all 17 games for the Falcons last season, starting eight. On the year, the 29-year-old RB gained 503 yards across his 138 carries, scoring three touchdowns.

However, once Cordarrelle Patterson broke out, the all-around athlete quickly became the preferred option for Arthur Smith and the Atlanta offense.

Now, the Falcons are set to move forward with Patterson as the No. 1 option, with the rookie Allgeier or vet Damien Williams as the complementary running back.

At 5-foot-9, 220-pounds, Davis is a solidly built runner that can certainly give a team some backfield depth, even as he approaches that age 30 number.
