Veteran EDGE Trey Flowers makes sense as free-agent addition for Raiders

May 23, 2022 by Raiders Wire

Over the last few days, we’ve seen several veterans get picked up by contending teams. That list includes Jadeveon Clowney (Browns), Jarvis Landry (Saints), and Melvin Ingram (Dolphins).

Could the Raiders be the next team to sign a proven veteran in free agency before training camp begins?

In a recent article by Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report, he named the top free agents going into the rest of the summer. One player that he listed was former Patriots and Lions defensive end Trey Flowers. Here is a snippet of his thoughts on the two-time Super Bowl champion:

“Flowers’ second season in Detroit was more successful than his sack total would have you believe, earning an 83.3 grade from PFF in seven games. He played well against the run and generated 13 total pressures.

Flowers was less productive in 2021 as he transitioned to Dan Campbell’s defense, but he played in a system he wasn’t signed to play in. Ultimately, he’s a 29-year-old with proven production at an important position.”

Ballentine listed the Raiders as a potential landing spot for Flowers, given their ties to the Patriots. Could Flowers operate as a 3-4 defensive end and even play as a base-end on early downs to help stop the run? That seems like a good fit considering his strength and the defensive coordinator.

Flowers does make a lot of sense on paper. Let’s see if the Raiders have an interest here as we get closer to training camp.
