Believe it or not, Urban Meyer has yet to name who his starting quarterback will be this upcoming season.
Meyer’s remained adamant there’s a legitimate competition between Trevor Lawrence and Gardner Minshew, but we all know how this is going to end. Lawrence will get the start. He’s a generational talent and the sky’s the limit.
So what’s taking Meyer so long to make a decision? Let’s be honest here. He’s treating this like a college football quarterback competition. We get it. That’s all he knows up to this point in his career. But this is the NFL, and professionals should be treated as such.
Luckily, it looks like a decision could soon be made. Meyer told reporters on Friday that he’d prefer to name his starting quarterback before Jacksonville’s third preseason game. Make no mistake, though. Meyer also left open the possibility of naming a starter after the preseason has concluded.
Urban Meyer still isn’t naming his starting QB. Could it take until after the third preseason game?
“In theory it could, but I’d rather not.”

This is getting weird. Gamesmanship and open competitions don’t work as well in the NFL as both do in college. Urban Meyer is hoping the two strategies will translate, though.
Trevor Lawrence will be the Jaguars’ starting quarterback. Book it. He was the No. 1 overall pick for a reason and is now the new franchise quarterback of the Jaguars.
Meyer clearly didn’t want to hand him the starting gig from the jump. But it’s only a matter of time before he finally gives in and names the former Clemson star his starter.
