After housing some of the NFL’s most atrocious quarterback play last season, the New York Giants are reportedly signing Tyrod Taylor.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the pending signing, and ESPN’s Adam Schefter said Taylor will join his sixth NFL team on a two-year, $17.5 million deal with $8.5 million guaranteed.
The #Giants are expected to sign QB Tyrod Taylor, source said. A high-level backup behind Daniel Jones.

Former Texans’ QB Tyrod Taylor intends to sign a two-year, $17 million deal, including $8.5 million with the New York Giants, per source.

Plenty of fans were happy to see the Giants upgrade the position after watching Mike Glennon and Jake Fromm struggle mightily in place of Daniel Jones late last season.
This is a good signing for the #Giants who need to add some competition to their QB room. https://t.co/omXxiqyQa7

Finally a good backup QB https://t.co/vbzL4c9pLA

In fact, some onlookers think he’ll compete, and perhaps win the starting job over Jones.
“High-level backup”. Tyrod is competing for that job. https://t.co/iCQjxd2Awt

I give it 4 games til he’s the starter. https://t.co/VUC8csZuBs

However, others were surprised at the price tag for a quarterback who has started 10 games for three teams in the last four seasons.
We’ll see on the structure but don’t understand giving real money to a backup QB with so many other holes https://t.co/40zOB023FU

Honestly that’s a lot of cash. It also means the Giants are serious on being out on this year’s QB class. They won’t draft someone top-10 after that type of investment in a backup. https://t.co/QHp09tPEJ5

So the Giants brass loved Mitch so much they were willing to pay Tyrod more…. https://t.co/LxyjjlO4SY

Taylor’s reported new contract has a higher base value than Mitchell Trubisky, who signed a two-year, $14.25 million deal — with incentives driving it up to $27 million — with the Pittsburgh Steelers to start in place of Ben Roethlisberger.
The Giants wouldn’t have paid Taylor so well with the full intention of him holding a clipboard all year. While he’s unlikely to win the job outright out of camp, the well-traveled veteran drastically reduces Jones’ job security during a contract year.
At the very least, this signing should make sure Big Blue doesn’t run any more third-and-long quarterback sneaks.
