Talk of Tom Brady’s future retirement always seems to pop up around this time of year with the NFL season winding down. However, it still sounds like the 44-year-old quarterback is far from hanging up in his jersey for good.
Ahead of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers‘ Wild Card round game against the Philadelphia Eagles, Brady did give some further insight on when he’ll know that he’s ready to leave football.
Previously, the seven-time Super Bowl champion has said seriously that “when he sucks”, he’ll retire. He explained in different words exactly what he means by that on Thursday.
“When I’m not capable of leading a team to victory, someone else should do the job,” Brady said, per Sara Walsh of FOX Sports.

Brady certainly hasn’t hit that drop-off yet. In 2021, he proved once again that he’s still one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.
Brady led the league during the regular season with 5,316 passing yards and 43 passing touchdowns. He completed 67.5 percent of his passes and threw just 12 interceptions.
Not only was his individual performance as sharp as ever, but Brady led the Buccaneers back to the playoffs for the second year in a row. Tampa Bay went 13-4 and cruised to an NFC South title, awarding the franchise home field advantage for the first two rounds of the postseason.
It’s difficult to imagine an NFL without Brady when he’s still playing at such a high level. His age might start to show eventually, but at 44, the winningest quarterback in league history is proving that he can still be a starter for years to come.
Now that he’s addressed the annual retirement rumor, Brady can keep his focus on this weekend’s matchup against Philadelphia. The Buccaneers and Eagles will square off at Raymond James Stadium on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
