It appears the New England Patriots have finally decided who’ll be their starting kicker for this Sunday’s showdown with the Miami Dolphins.
For the past two weeks, it seemed like rookie kicker Quinn Nordin had the inside track at the job. Despite an inconsistent preseason, the Michigan product made the team’s 53-man roster.
Even though Nordin made the 53-man roster for the Patriots, the team’s latest move hints at him waiting a bit longer before becoming the unquestioned starter.
On Saturday afternoon, New England elevated veteran kicker Nick Folk from its practice squad. NFL Network’s Mike Giardi believes Folk will handle the kicking duties against Miami.
“Nick Folk and Brian Hoyer elevated by the Patriots for tomorrow’s game,” Giardi said. “Would seem to suggest Quinn Nordin might have to wait to make his NFL regular season debut.”

When asked about the team’s kicking situation, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick kept his cards close to the vest.
“I think there’s a lot of merit to it,” Belichick said, via ProFootballTalk. “That’s why he’s on the practice squad, as all the players are. With the two standard activations that teams are allowed to have, that’s a lot different than it was going back to ‘19 where it was a whole different set of rules. There’s certainly more flexibility and I feel like right now we have two good kickers combined on our total roster. That’s a good thing.”
There are several teams in the NFL that are still searching for one good kicker, so Belichick is absolutely right about their depth at the position being a good thing.
If Folk gets the start on Sunday, the fans in Foxborough should feel fairly comfortable when his number is called. He was outstanding for the Patriots in 2020, making 26-of-28 field goal attempts.
