Brett Rypien has signed his one-year exclusive rights tender with the Denver Broncos, according to team reporter Aric DiLalla.
The quarterback has spent three years shuttling from Denver’s practice squad to the bench since arriving as an undrafted free agent in 2019. As the third-stringer behind Teddy Bridgewater and Drew Lock, he attempted just two passes last season.
Denver also retained safety P.J. Locke, who played 16 games off the bench last season.

Rypien received his only true NFL action when starting against the New York Jets in Week 4 of the 2020 season. He went 19-of-31 for 242 yards, two passing touchdowns, and three interceptions in a 37-28 victory.
The 6-foot-2 passer shined with the Broncos before going to Denver. Rypien threw 90 touchdowns across four seasons for Boise State, where he earned Mountain West Conference Player of the Year honors in 2018.
After the Broncos acquired Russell Wilson from the Seattle Seahawks, there’s no controversy under center. Josh Johnson, who joined Denver on a one-year deal last month, is likely to again relegate Rypien to third-string duties.
