The Dallas Cowboys announced multiple jersey number changes entering the 2022 season.
According to the team’s site, 13 players are switching to a new number. The Athletic’s Jon Machota highlighted a few alterations.
The Cowboys announced some jersey number updates today:
CB Kelvin Joseph: No. 1
DE Chauncey Golston: No. 99
S Israel Mukuamu: No. 24
RB Rico Dowdle: No. 23
RB Sewo Olonilua: No. 33Also:
WR James Washington: No. 83
DE Dante Fowler: No. 56— Jon Machota (@jonmachota) April 12, 2022
Cornerback Kelvin Joseph and defensive end Chauncey Golston went to the opposite ends of the spectrum, choosing Nos. 1 and 99, respectively.
After donning No. 13 (currently in use by Michael Gallup) with the Pittsburgh Steelers, free-agent signing James Washington will convert to No. 83.
Sewo Olonilua switching from No. 45 to 33 could also raise some eyebrows. The fullback will now wear a number that once belonged to Tony Dorsett, a Hall of Fame running back who exceeded 1,000 rushing yards in eight of 11 seasons in Dallas.
The Cowboys have not formally retired anyone’s jersey number. That has led to Dez Bryant taking on Michael Irvin’s No. 88 and linebacker Jaylen Smith switching to Tony Romo’s old No. 9 last season.
However, Nos 8 (Troy Aikman), 12 (Roger Staubach), and 22 (Emmitt Smith) have remained out of circulation.
Jersey changes are more common after the NFL loosened restrictions on which numbers players could wear last year. Previously limited based to a select range based on their position, everyone now has more options at their disposal.
