The Carolina Panthers are making a few changes to their special teams.
The Panthers cut kicker Ryan Santoso on Tuesday. With a vacant spot available, Carolina has since signed a new player. The Panthers have signed kicker Zane Gonzalez who was most recently on the Detroit Lions’ practice squad.
“The Panthers have a new kicker,” the team announced on Tuesday. “And, they have their seventh-round pick back. The Panthers waived kicker Ryan Santoso Tuesday, ending the experiment with the former Giants kicker after one week of the regular season. Santoso missed an extra point in Sunday’s win over the Jets.”
This is a win-win for Carolina. The Panthers needed a new kicker and now they get their seventh-round pick back.

The Panthers began the 2021 season with a win. They beat the New York Jets 19-14 on Sunday.
New Carolina quarterback Sam Darnold had a strong performance. The former Jets quarterback completed 24 of his 35 pass attempts for 279 yards and one touchdown. The electric Christian McCaffrey had 98 yards rushing and 89 yards receiving. It was yet another versatile performance by the star running back.
The Panthers defense, meanwhile, shut down the Jets’ rushing attack and limited rookie Zach Wilson to 258 yards passing and two touchdowns with one interception.
There was plenty to like about the Panthers in their season opener. They’ll try and move to 2-0 this coming Sunday versus the New Orleans Saints.
