College football fans were surprised when former five-star recruit Tate Martell announced that he would attend UNLV and join the school’s football program this upcoming fall. After stops at Ohio State and Miami, the dual-threat quarterback seemingly went to the Group of Five to try and prolong his college career.
Earlier this week, Martell revealed that he thinks his transfer stock took a major hit this summer because he underwent thumb surgery following his departure from the Hurricanes. He said that he was thankful to have another shot with UNLV and was eager to be back on the field more regularly once he’s fully recovered.
“The schools I was talking to randomly stopped talking to me once I told them I had surgery on my thumb,” Martell wrote in a series of slides on the TikTok post. “I hit rock bottom about a year ago and was going to quit football. Decided one random day to leave Miami and come home and train. Dedicated all my time to graduating, getting in the best shape of my life and changing myself as a person.
“Then two months ago I had surgery on my thumb, thought everything I worked to become was for nothing. UNLV still gave me the opportunity to play for them. I’m extremely grateful. I’m continuing to recover from surgery and work everyday with my teammates.”

Back in mid-August, Mike Grimala of the Las Vegas Sun reported that Martell hadn’t been cleared for full practice due to the lingering thumb injury. He was getting back to full speed, but had only participated in individual drills at the time.
“… He’s done a good job in individual [drills], trying to get himself going and it’s been good to see him out there and engaged,” UNLV head coach Marcus Arroyo said, per Grimala.
Martell figures to factor into the Rebels quarterback competition if he is healthy. Although he hasn’t quite gotten the opportunity to show off his skills during his college career, the 23-year-old still has enough natural talent to compete.
If he can get back on the field full-time at UNLV, it shouldn’t be long until football fans seem him in action.
