Stephen Curry Was Asked If He Blames Marcus Smart For Injury

March 30, 2022 by The Spun

Stephen Curry remains sidelined after spraining a ligament in his left foot on March 16. The injury occurred when Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart dived on Curry’s leg while pursuing a loose ball.

When asked his opinion on the play a few days later, via 95.7 The Game (h/t NESN’s Marcus Kwesi O’Mard), Curry said there was no ill-intent from Smart.

“He didn’t try to hurt me,” Curry said. “There’s a certain way that he plays that I don’t think many other people would have made the play that he did, but I don’t think it was malicious or dirty or trying to hurt me. Kind of just a tough situation. Like I said, it’s just the way that he plays. There’s conversation just around should he or shouldn’t he have, but it wasn’t like he looked at me and was like, ‘I’m trying to hurt that dude.’ It’s basketball.”

Not everyone agrees. Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr exchanged words with Smart after the incident and called it “a dangerous play” after the game.

On Saturday, per The Athletic’s Anthony Slater, Kerr said Curry is still rehabbing the foot. However, there’s hope of the two-time MVP returning before the postseason.

The Warriors have lost five of their last six games without Curry, falling to third in the Western Conference with only a 1.5-game edge over the No. 4 seed Dallas Mavericks. They need their star scorer back to make any playoff noise.
