On Wednesday morning, the tennis world learned that Serena Williams is the latest major name to withdraw from this month’s U.S. Open.
Williams said she has been battling through a torn hamstring. At the advice of her doctors, she decided to pull out of the competition.
“After careful consideration and following the advice of my doctors and medical team, I have decided to withdraw from the U.S Open to allow my body to heal completely from a torn hamstring,” she said in a statement this morning.
“New York is one of the most exciting cities in the world and one of my favorites places to play – I’ll miss seeing the fans but will be cheering everyone from afar. Thank you for your continued support and love. I’ll see you soon.”
Fans noted that with Williams pulling out, the U.S. Open won’t have Williams, Rafael Nadal or Roger Federer.
It’s clear fans are heartbroken three of the biggest names in the sport won’t be competing.
The 2021 US Open will be the first Grand Slam event without Serena Williams, Roger Federer, or Rafael Nadal in the main singles draw since the 1997 US Open.

It’s a tough break for all three athletes who are chasing history at the same time. Nadal and Federer are trying to outpace Novak Djokovic to see who wins the most majors.
Serena Williams, meanwhile, is chasing Margaret Court’s record of 24 major titles. Williams has 23, a number she’s been stuck on since 2017.
The U.S. Open officially kicks off on August 30.
