The New England Patriots open the 2021 NFL season in just a few weeks, but the team still doesn’t know whom its starting quarterback will be.
So far in training camp, veteran Cam Newton and rookie quarterback Mac Jones have been battling for the starting role. During the team’s second preseason game on Tuesday night, both Newton and Jones looked like legitimate starting quarterbacks.
But only one can win the job. Fox Sports analyst and host Skip Bayless made his prediction for who will win the job: he’s going with Mac Jones.
“Just a gut feeling: Belichick will start Mac Jones on opening day,” Bayless said on Twitter tonight. “Cam was never his guy. Cam was an MVP elsewhere. Belichick drafted Mac Jones to be his Brady … who returns to Foxboro Sunday night Oct. 3.”

Newton played sparingly during Thursday night’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles. However, he was sharp, connecting on 8-of-9 passes for 103 yards and a touchdown to wide receiver Jakobi Meyers.
Jones on the other hand, has completed 13-of-19 passes for 146 yards with no touchdowns or turnovers. He nearly completed a 50-yard pass play to wide receiver N’Keal Harry, who left with an injury.
Both quarterbacks were dialed in tonight, which won’t make head coach Bill Belichick‘s decision any easier. He still has a few weeks to decide who will be under center in Week 1, though.
