This season has been a disaster for the Los Angeles Lakers, and franchise legend Shaquille O’Neal thinks drastic changes are in order.
During an appearance on CBS Sports HQ, O’Neal suggested gutting the roster that has racked up a 31-47 record with four games still to play.
“You’ve got to get rid of expiring contracts. You’ve got to get rid of the projects that didn’t work. You’ve got to try and get younger and more athletic around LeBron,” O’Neal said.
In O’Neal’s mind, only two players should be safe: stars LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
“Keep LeBron and AD and make moves for everybody else.”

After winning the 2019-20 NBA championship, the Lakers slumped to a seventh-place finish in the West last season. Still, after some offseason moves, including a trade for Russell Westbrook, Los Angeles was projected to compete for a title in 2021-22.
Instead, almost nothing has gone right, with the team’s veteran (some might say old) acquisitions being largely disappointing, and James and Davis both missing time with injuries.
Add it all up and the Lakers are currently 1.5 games out of a play-in spot with only four games left.
