Sha’Carri Richardson Sends Clear Message After Disappointing Race

A rough summer for track & field star Sha’Carri Richardson got even rougher over the weekend as she finished ninth at the Nike Prefontaine Classic.

But if you think the 2019 NCAA Champion is going to let the setback get her down, you clearly don’t know Sha’Carri Richardson. Speaking to the media after the race, Richardson declared that she isn’t going anywhere, and dared her detractors to keep criticizing her.

“Count me out if you want to,” Richardson said. “Talk all the s-t you want. ‘Cause I’m here to stay.”

Nevertheless, the doubters were out in full force after her shocking performance in the race. There’s plenty of speculation as to what led to that poor performance – none of it good.

Sha’Carri Richardson has ranked among the best sprinters in the world for several years now. She rose to national prominence in 2019, when she ran a 10.75 100m dash in the NCAA Championships – a tournament record – as a 19-year old.

This past April, Richardson approached history when she ran a 10.72 in Miramar, the sixth-fastest recorded time ever.

But despite qualifying for the Summer Olympics in Tokyo, she was suspended and not permitted to compete after testing positive for cannabis. There was significant backlash and debate around the decision that made it all the way to President Joe Biden’s office.

This may be a setback for Sha’Carri Richardson, but it’s on her to keep it from becoming a regular thing.
