Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston have been competing for the New Orleans Saints starting quarterback job for months now. But head coach Sean Payton appears on the verge of naming his starter.
On Monday’s edition of Football Morning in America, NFL insider Peter King revealed that he spoke to Payton, who told him that he plans to make the decision ahead of Saturday’s preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals. Winston is slated to start in tonight’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars after Hill started last week against the Baltimore Ravens.
“Payton told me he hopes to name his starter before the final preseason game Saturday against Arizona, so Winston’s performance with the first team for multiple series will be the most important game he’s played since he lost his job in 2019 in Tampa Bay,” King wrote.
King went on to say that Payton is not ready to make a firm decision. He speculated that a big game from Winston against the Jaguars would go a long way towards the former No. 1 overall pick getting the nod.

The difference between Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston is almost top-to-bottom.
Winston was a five-year starter for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who could air the ball out for huge yardage. But his knack for throwing interceptions ultimately led the team to let him go after the 2019 season. He rode the bench in 2020 and threw only a few passes.
Hill joined the Saints as a UDFA in 2017 out of BYU and has been a utility player for most of his career. Last year he got his big break at quarterback, going 3-1 as a starter in relief of an injured Drew Brees.
Both have their pros and cons, making it a tough decision for Sean Payton.
At least we know when it’s coming now.
