Seahawks Are Reportedly Meeting With Top Quarterback

April 6, 2022 by The Spun

After trading long-time franchise cornerstone Russell Wilson, the Seattle Seahawks have a need at quarterback and extra draft picks to find a successor.

At the annual NFL meetings, head coach Pete Carroll said they’re “definitely still in the quarterback business.” While this year’s draft class doesn’t feature can’t-miss passing prospects, the Seahawks nevertheless at least appear to be entertaining the idea of using the No. 9 pick on one.

According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, Seattle is scheduled to meet with Cincinnati’s Desmond Ridder next week.

According to MMQB’s Albert Breer, Ridder is also one of six quarterbacks who will meet with the Carolina Panthers next week. The Panthers, who are looking to move on from Sam Darnold, pick sixth in the draft.

A top-10 landing spot seems lofty for the Bearcats quarterback. In his latest mock draft, ESPN’s Todd McShay has the Detroit Lions making Ridder the final pick of the first round.

Yet there’s usually at least one quarterback who shoots up boards in the weeks before draft day. Could Ridder fit that mold this year?

Per 93.7 The Fan’s Andrew Fillipponi, USA Today‘s Keith Jenkins, made an eye-opening comparison that suggests the helium is expanding.

Cincinnati football writer @MrKeithJenkins on Bearcats QB Desmond Ridder on @937theFan: “I don’t want people to go crazy with this, but he reminds me of Patrick Mahomes.”

!!!

Do you want the Steelers to pick Ridder with the 20th pick?

The 22-year-old threw for 3,334 passing yards and 30 passing touchdowns in his final season with Cincinnati. However, he struggled mightily in a 27-6 loss to Alabama in the College Football Playoff semifinals, going 17-of-32 for 144 passing yards.

Without a clear top quarterback in this year’s draft class, Seattle or Carolina could land on Ridder as its preferred option if either franchise decides the void under center is too big to ignore.
