The New Orleans Saints entered this offseason in need of help at the wide receiver position. With the first two weeks of free agency just about over, the front office has not yet addressed the roster’s biggest weakness.
Unfortunately for the Saints, they just missed out on signing the best remaining free-agent wide receiver.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Saints were initially the favorites to sign Marquez Valdes-Scantling. That was right before the Kansas City Chiefs offered him a three-year deal worth up to $36 million.
“Source says the New Orleans Saints were in heavy pursuit of Marquez Valdes-Scantling with a two-year deal,” Fowler said. “New Orleans was the favorite — until Kansas City stepped up in the final hour with big three-year money. Packers were in consideration with a one-year deal.”

Valdes-Scantling, 27, finished the 2021 season with 26 catches for 430 yards and three touchdowns.
Though he wasn’t an elite playmaker during his time with the Green Bay Packers, Valdes-Scantling proved from time to time that he could stretch the field.
Over the past four seasons, Valdes-Scantling has averaged 17.5 yards per reception. The Saints could’ve certainly used a playmaker like him for the 2022 season.
