Last weekend, the New Orleans Saints allowed Taysom Hill to run the first-team offense. On Monday night, Jameis Winston will get his chance to show Sean Payton what he can do as the starter.
Following last night’s practice, Payton confirmed that Winston will start for the Saints on Monday night against the Jaguars. This is a great opportunity for the former No. 1 pick to prove that he has learned from his mistakes this offseason.
New Orleans has been rotating quarterbacks throughout training camp, so this doesn’t mean Winston has won the starting job for Week 1 of the regular season. However, that could change depending on how he performs against Jacksonville.

Payton didn’t reveal how many snaps Winston will receive against the Jaguars, but ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler expects to see a healthy dose of Winston on Monday.
“I’m told he should get a healthy run at quarterback this week,” Fowler said on Get Up. “The Saints have not revealed who’s starting yet, but there is a good chance he does start, because they want to flip-flop Taysom Hill and Winston. He can start to try to take ownership of this job. He’s getting Tre’Quan Smith back; that’s significant. Those two worked together all summer. He’s back from injury and maybe they’ll start connecting in game action.”
During the Saints’ preseason opener, Winston completed 7-of-12 passes for 96 yards, a touchdown and an interception. He’ll need to be much better against the Jaguars if he wants to cement his status as the team’s starting quarterback.
Kickoff for the Jaguars-Saints game is on Monday at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN.
