Ohio State‘s quarterback room was already loaded, with former blue-chip underclassmen C.J. Stroud, Jack Miller, and Kyle McCord battling it out for the starting job. That was before Quinn Ewers, the top prep quarterback in the country, reclassified up in order to enroll at OSU this year.
Ewers opted to forego his senior high school season, making a surprise jump to college right away. That will allow him to take advantage of the new NIL opportunities, even if he isn’t expected to be in the mix to start right away.
His presence adds another element to training camp for Ryan Day and his Ohio State staff. On top of figuring out the quarterback situation for the 2021 season, he has four big-time former recruits to manage. The Buckeyes head coach discussed Ewers in a Big Ten Network interview.
“We’re just gonna bring him along,” Day said. “You know, there’s a lot going on right now for Quinn, a lot coming at him. I think he’s done a really good job so far of not, kind of, you know, just jumping into it.”
Day says that Quinn Ewers has mostly been getting reps towards the end of practice. He also appreciates how Ewers has handled things with the other players on the team, since he has made a pretty bold jump.
“He’s showing respect to the guys around him and I think that the guys appreciate that. So, we’ve been getting some work with him at the end of practice, he’s been jumping in individual drills and picking up everything fast. But he’s certainly drinking through a firehose, and I think the guys on the team appreciate that. He doesn’t have the recruits that, you know, was in his class. He kind of jumped ahead so. But he’s a resilient young man.”
Ewers is one of the most highly-rated recruits of all time, with a perfect 1.0000 score from 247Sports‘ composite rankings. He was the No. 1 2022 recruit, and took over the same spot in 2021 after his reclassification.
Most expect that he’s the “quarterback of the future” for the Buckeyes at some point soon, but the guys a few years ahead of him will be doing all they can to hold him off.
