Ryan Day: 1 QB “Leads” In Ohio State’s QB Battle

Just like the seem to every year, the Ohio State Buckeyes have an overwhelming amount of talent on the QB depth chart heading into the 2021 season. But, according to head coach Ryan Day, one quarterback option is sticking out as the frontrunner in preseason practice.

As of right now, it appears the QB1 job is C.J. Stroud’s to lose.

Day explained how the redshirt freshman’s consistency has locked him in as the expected starter in 2021.

“I guess it’s really a body of work over 27 practices, when you count the spring,” Day said, per Big Ten Network. “We try to take it one day at a time and look at the body of work. It’s not one thing. Day in and day out, he’s making really good decisions. Leadership. Obviously, taking care of the football. The ability to win in the red zone and win on third down has been critical.”

While Stroud may be the starter for Week 1, Day insinuated that a mid-season quarterback change could be in the Buckeye’s future.

“At the end of the day, we’re going to have one person playing quarterback against Minnesota on Sept. 2, and then it’s a long year from there,” he added.

Stroud is just one of many viable options for Ohio State head into 2021. In addition to returning redshirt freshman Jack Miller, the Buckeyes’ 2021 recruiting class will also bring in two more five-star freshman: Kyle McCord and Quinn Ewers. Ewers, the No. 1 overall recruit in the nation, announced his decision to reclassify and join the team a year early earlier this month.

The Ohio State coaching staff haven’t officially named a starter for the 2021 season, but Day first gave the edge to Stroud earlier this week.

“We’re not going to name a starter right now,” Day told Bucknuts on Monday. “But there has been some separation with C.J. Stroud.

“I don’t now how much, but every day he’s taking care of the football, he’s making plays, he’s being accurate with the football, he’s being a leader and he’s moving the team down the field and scoring touchdowns, and those are all things we’re looking for.”
