RUMOR: Former Raiders Fourth Rounder Could Be On Trade Block

June 7, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

After a disastrous end to the 2024 campaign, the Detroit Lions could put cornerback Amik Robertson on the trade block. The Lions’ secondary unit was one of the best through the entire 2024 regular season until they were exposed in the Divisional Round of the playoffs against the Washington Commanders. It wasn’t their fault since they lost a lot of contributors at the worst time, but it’s Super Bowl or bust for the Lions this upcoming 2025 campaign. After signing DJ Reed this free agency and drafting Ennis Rakestraw Jr., there isn’t a lot of room for Robertson to excel next season after being the main starter alongside Terrion Arnold last year.

Originally selected in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft, the former Louisiana Tech product entered the league struggling to get anything going in Las Vegas. The Lions took a chance on him, and even if it was a slow start in 2023, it didn’t stop Robertson from having one of the most spectacular campaigns last season. He earned a two-year deal last offseason, and now that Robertson is hoping to endure a turnaround from his injury, it might be best to trade him to net some potential draft capital. With Avonte Maddox coming in at nickelback for the Lions, the team has enough depth to move on from Robertson and stick with the group they have now.

Even though Robertson is coming off a season-ending injury, it shouldn’t affect his status to attract some type of interest from teams. The cornerback will need to prove this upcoming season, but these two teams could take advantage of the contract situation for Robertson.

Potential Destinations

Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens’ secondary will look dramatically different since they lost Brandon Stephens in free agency and cut Marcus Williams. Even though Marlon Humphrey and Nate Wiggins are the starters for this unit, they must get some reliable depth behind them. Chidobe Awuzie signing with the Ravens was probably the most disappointing, and this might not last through the entire 2025 regular season. Robertson is the better upgrade in this situation to make this passing defense from good to explosive.

Los Angeles Chargers

After a promising debut season from head coach Jim Harbaugh last year, the Chargers have been upgrading their trenches, running game and secondary unit. However, the team could use some bolstering in the cornerback department as they can’t afford to depend on Cam Hart for full-time duties. The Chargers’ signing of Donte Jackson was exceptional, and 2024 draft pick Tarheeb Still is looking phenomenal, but they need someone with experience to start in this unit. Just like Jackson, the team would benefit from Robertson’s presence to give the team enough power to achieve the same success as last year.

With Kristian Fulton gone and Asante Samuel Jr. still unsigned, the team might be better off with Robertson to step in temporarily to give this team a chance to win close football games.

New Orleans Saints

However, the New Orleans Saints are still in dire need of a cornerback. They did their work to lock down Justin Reid this offseason to a contract, but they can’t ignore giving Kool-Aid McKinstry and Alontae Taylor some worthy depth. McKinstry has the upside to be a capable starter, but the same can’t be said about Taylor. Robertson’s current contract could fit with the Saints to give this team a legitimate chance to win a few more games than predicted this upcoming year.
