Report: Update On QB Tate Martell’s Status At UNLV

Miami wide receiver Tate Martell against Florida.

Former five-star recruit Tate Martell wanted to prove that the third time is the charm when he transferred to UNLV from Miami earlier this summer. The 23-year-old former Hurricane and Ohio State Buckeye may be on his last chance in college football, so wants to make the most out of his new opportunity.

However, Martell’s arrival to the UNLV quarterback competition has been a bit delayed.

According to Mike Grimala of the Las Vegas Sun, the Rebels incoming transfer hadn’t been cleared for a full practice as of Thursday due to a lingering thumb injury. He’s participated in a few drills but hasn’t been able to factor into the quarterback competition just yet.

“Tate Martell is still waiting for his opportunity to jump into the quarterback battle, as the junior remains limited by a hand injury,” Grimala wrote. “The Miami transfer participated in some individual drills on Thursday but has yet to be cleared for a full practice.

UNLV head coach Marcus Arroyo shared that he hasn’t heard anything from Martell about his recovery timeline, but that the transfer quarterback has looked the part in his individual drills.

“He hasn’t told me nothing,” Arroyo said, per Grimala. “He’s done a good job in individual [drills], trying to get himself going and it’s been good to see him out there and engaged.”

Martell last saw in-game action at Miami in 2019, when he’d switched to play more wide receiver for the Hurricanes. He completed the lone pass that he threw and ran seven times for seven yards.

After he was suspended for the first game of the shortened 2020 season, Martell opted out of the campaign completely. That means the last time he really got any significant experience at quarterback was all the way back in 2018 with Ohio State.

Martell still has time to factor into the UNLV quarterback room, but will need to get back on the field as soon as possible if he hopes to be the one under center when the Rebels start their 2021 regular season.
