Report: Details Emerge From The Carson Wentz Situation

For the first time since having foot surgery, Carson Wentz was supposed to return to team drills on Monday. Instead, he was placed on the Colts’ Reserve/COVID-19 list.

Wentz, along with wide receiver Zach Pascal and center Ryan Kelly, were put on the COVID reserve list because of close contact with a staff member who tested positive. None of the three players tested positive for the virus themselves, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

According to league protocols, any players who are not fully vaccinated must quarantine for five days if they come into close contact with someone who tests positive. All three Colts could return to practice after five days if they remain without symptoms and keep testing negative.

“Under the NFL-NFLPA protocols, high-risk close contacts can return in just five days as long as they remain asymptomatic and continue to test negative,” Pelissero said. “If you test positive and you’re not fully vaccinated, you’re out a minimum of 10 days. If you’re vaccinated, you’re out until you have two negative tests at least 24 hours apart.”

Wentz injured his foot early in training camp and had surgery to repair the issue. Since his return to team drills will be further delayed, it puts his status for the season opener on September 12 in doubt.

Assuming he is good to return after his five-day quarantine, Wentz will still have a week to prepare for Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks. But Indianapolis head coach Frank Reich will have to weigh if it is worth having the franchise quarterback out there coming off injury with limited reps under his belt.
