The Baltimore Ravens and New England Patriots have very different priorities with their roster setup heading into that season. As a result, a fairly big trade between the two teams appears to be imminent.
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Ravens are close to trading rookie cornerback Shaun Wade to the Patriots. Wade was a fifth-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft after a stellar career at Ohio State.
But the Ravens also boast a glut of solid defensive backs for the coming season. They can probably afford to let Wade go even if they haven’t yet seen all they can do.
The Patriots are a bit of a different story though. Their defense was above average in 2020, but gave up the most points of the Bill Belichick era. They could use another solid high-ceiling cornerback.
The #Ravens are close on a trade of fifth-round pick CB Shaun Wade, the former Ohio State standout, to the #Patriots, sources. A high-ceiling player likely added to New England’s secondary.

As a member of the Ohio State Buckeyes, Shaun Wade was one of the elite cornerbacks in college football. He was a two-time All-Big Ten selection and a consensus All-American in 2020.
But his draft stock nosedived after a brutal performance against Alabama’s DeVonta Smith in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game. Once seen as a first-round pick or even the top cornerback in the draft, he fell all the way to the fifth-round.
While he remains an unknown at the NFL level, Wade still has a ton of potential.
Will Shaun Wade be a good fit for the New England Patriots?
Update: The trade has been agreed to.
The Patriots are acquiring CB Shaun Wade in a trade with the Ravens, per source. First reported by @RapSheet. Still unclear if this is related to Jon Jones’ injury today in practice.
