Raiders Release Sixth-Round Picks QB Cam Miller, WR Tommy Mellott

August 29, 2025 by Raiders Nation

Training camp is now over, and teams across the NFL had to make some difficult decisions in cutting down their rosters to the required 53 men. For the Las Vegas Raiders, that meant some tough calls on players the franchise just drafted.

The Raiders released sixth-round pick QB Cam Miller as well as WR Tommy Mellott as part of their final cuts down to the 53-man roster, via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk:

The Raiders acquired Kenny Pickett in a trade with the Browns this week and that left no room on the 53-man roster for sixth-round pick Cam Miller.

Miller was one of the players waived on Tuesday as the Raiders reached the regular season roster limit. Pickett will back up Geno Smith with Aidan O’Connell set to miss several weeks with a wrist injury. O’Connell was not placed on injured reserve Tuesday, but could go on Wednesday as the Raiders continue their roster shuffling.

The Raiders also waived sixth-round pick Tommy Mellott, who was listed as a wide receiver after playing quarterback in college. He and Miller could return on the practice squad if they go unclaimed.

Miller’s spot on the roster was basically done in by the Raiders’ trade for quarterback Kenny Pickett. With Aidan O’Connell suffering a fractured wrist, the team had to swing a deal to get a backup for Geno Smith and carrying four quarterbacks on the roster simply wasn’t an option.

Mellott certainly has some potential as a wide receiver, despite playing quarterback in college, but with the team signing veteran Amari Cooper and also selecting Dont’e Thornton and Jack Bech in the draft, the Raiders simply didn’t have the room to keep him on the roster.

Miller did end up on the Raiders’ practice squad, but the same can’t be said for Mellott.

Raiders WR Jakobi Meyers requests trade prior to Amari Cooper signing

There has also been some controversy surrounding the Raiders, as top wide receiver Jakobi Meyers requested a trade after the two sides were unable to come to terms on a contract extension. The Raiders are not expected to grant Meyers a trade, and while some believe Meyers requested the trade in response to the Raiders signing Amari Cooper, the decision actually came before that move.
