Raiders News: Hunter Renfrow Compares Jon Gruden To Dabo Swinney

May 26, 2020 by Raiders Nation Leave a Comment

It was an eventful and exciting offseason for the Las Vegas Raiders as they were able to revamp their roster through free agency and the 2020 NFL Draft and appear ready to make some noise heading into the 2020 NFL season.

The Raiders added several exciting new additions to both sides of the field, but they already had some promising players on the team who should make an impact heading into the regular season. One of those players is Hunter Renfrow, the slot wide receiver Las Vegas selected No. 149th overall in the 2019 NFL Draft out of Clemson.

In an appearance on SportsCenter, Renfrow was asked about the difference between Jon Gruden and Dabo Swinney but the receiver believes they are more alike than people think, via Raiders:

“I always tell everyone they’re similar. They care so much about their players. They care who they are; they care where they come from,” Renfrow said, pausing for the punchline: “They both tell stories and make things fun, but Coach Gruden likes to cuss a lot more than Coach Swinney.”

Renfrow also admitted there is added pressure to perform for both of them because of their passion for the game and the care they have for all their players:

“Wow, oh my goodness,” Renfrow said. “Because they care so much about the game but also how you do as a person and how you play the game… messing up in front of both of them would be pretty tough.”

Las Vegas has a fondness for Clemson Tiger products, and Renfrow is one example of that as he had a productive career under Swinney, amassing 186 receptions for 2,133 receiving yards and 15 total touchdowns in his four-year college career. However, his career highlight came in the 2017 CFB National Championship game where he caught the game-winning touchdown from Deshaun Watson to hand Clemson the title over Alabama.

Gruden and Swinney are both heralded coaches in football circles and have been touted for their connection to players and their ability to get the most of their teams. Renfrow’s comments reflect that assessment as the two head coaches have more than earned their reputation.

Although the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has put a dampener on sports for the foreseeable future, the Silver and Black are in good shape and should contend for a playoff spot in 2020 assuming good health. Las Vegas will be home to an exciting up-and-coming Raiders squad so hopefully Renfrow and the rest of the team are able to deliver.
