Raiders News: Chris Simms Believes Chip Kelly’s On Hot Seat

October 26, 2025 by Raiders Nation

Chip Kelly, Raiders

The Las Vegas Raiders hit a new low in the 2025 season, getting shut out 31-0 in Week 7 against the Kansas City Chiefs.

It was a pathetic showing from the Raiders, who entered the contest shorthanded, failing to contain a methodical Chiefs offense while their own scoring unit was stuck in the mud. Geno Smith was miserable throwing the football as he was without his top-two targets in Brock Bowers and Jakobi Meyers, allowing Kansas City to sit back and dare him to beat them through the air.

Ashton Jeanty and the run game were also a non-factor, especially once Las Vegas found themselves trailing big in the second half. It was the kind of performance that forces an organization to make changes, and it feels like the Raiders are on the verge of shaking things up.

Analysts like Chris Simms believe that the first person to go could potentially be offensive coordinator Chip Kelly via Eduardo Razo of Heavy.com:

“I think Chip Kelly is probably the first guy they’re looking at and go, ‘I don’t know if we should have done that,’” Simms said on the October 20 edition of “Pro Football Talk.” “He looks like he’s in over his head as far as an offensive coordinator.”

“His offense is too simple. It’s too easy to figure out. For a guy like [Steve Spagnuolo], he was like, ‘What is this? This is kindergarten stuff for me. I got it.’ And I think that’s where you [have] to give Geno the benefit of the doubt.”

Kelly has been lauded in the past for his offensive schemes, but it looks like the NFL has figured him out, and the Raiders are suffering because of it. The passing game lacks any creativity, while the run game struggles to generate any explosive plays due to poor offensive line play.

Kelly isn’t the sole reason why Las Vegas is in the position it’s in, but he certainly hasn’t helped his case this season. Head coach Pete Carroll is struggling to hold things together, so he might be forced to let someone like Kelly go just to give the Silver and Black some hope of improvement.

Raiders mildly concerned with Geno Smith’s performance

A few weeks ago, reports were swirling that Geno Smith’s tenure was going sideways quickly. At the time, the Raiders were reportedly only mildly concerned with Smith’s performance, but that might have changed following the loss to the Chiefs.
