Rafael Nadal withdrew from Wimbledon and the Olympics this summer in an effort to preserve his body for the U.S. Open and other events later this year. Unfortunately, his plans for this summer didn’t come to fruition.
On Friday morning, Nadal pulled out of the U.S. Open because of a nagging foot injury. He announced on his Instagram account that he won’t be able to play the rest of the 2021 season because of his health.
“I am very sorry to announce that I won’t be able to keep playing tennis during the 2021 season,” Nadal said. “But as you know, I have been suffering too much with my foot for the last year now and I missed a lot of important events for me.”
Nadal revealed in his latest Instagram post that his foot injury is actually a chronic issue. Since he’s been battling it for most of his career though, he’s confident he can return to his old form in the future.
“During the last year I was not able to practice and prepare the way I need to be competitive at the standards I want to be,” Nadal continued. “The injury is nothing new. It is the same injury I am having since 2005. In that moment the doctors were very negative about my future career, but honestly I was able to have a career I was unable to ever dream about, so I am confident I will recover again.”
Nadal, 35, remains one of the best tennis players in the world. However, it’ll be tough for him to dethrone elite opponents like Novak Djokovic if he’s not at 100 percent.
Hopefully, we’ll see Nadal back on the court in 2022.
