Pro Bowl Quarterback Signs Contract With Chiefs

Gardner Minshew Contract

Six-year veteran quarterback Gardner Minshew signed a new contract with the Kansas City Chiefs. Minshew, a former sixth-round pick, spent the 2024 season with the Las Vegas Raiders but also played for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Philadelphia Eagles, and Indianapolis Colts.

Gardner Minshew, Chiefs, Agree to Contract

After nearly leading the Indianapolis Colts to the playoffs in 2023, Gardner Minshew signed with the Las Vegas Raiders to compete with former fifth-round pick Aidan O’Connell for the starting job. While he started the season under center, Minshew couldn’t bring his magic to the desert. Starting in nine games while making 10 appearances, the veteran completed 66.3% of his passes for 2,013 yards, nine touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. The Raiders went 2-7 in his starts and fired head coach Antonio Pierce after the dismal season.

Gardner Minshew originally entered the league as a sixth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Washington State product began his career behind former Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles. However, Foles suffered an injury during the first week of the 2019 season, opening the door for Minshew to start. The rookie made the most of his opportunity, completing 60.6% of his passes for 3,271 yards, 21 touchdowns, and six interceptions. While Jacksonville missed the playoffs, this strong performance allowed him to keep the starting job in 2020.

Unfortunately, Minshew couldn’t build on his impressive debut. While he was far from the biggest problem with the 2020 Jacksonville Jaguars, he only played in nine games while completing 66.1% of his passes for 2,259 yards, 16 touchdowns, and five interceptions. The Jaguars finished the season with the first-overall pick and selected Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Jacksonville later traded Minshew to the Philadelphia Eagles and spent two seasons backing up Jalen Hurts.

Gardner Minshew continued his journey across the NFL in 2023, signing a one-year contract with the Indianapolis Colts. Brought on to support rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson, Minshew ended up being the primary starter thanks to a series of injuries. He played reasonably well, completing 62.2% of his passes for 3,305 yards, 15 touchdowns, and nine interceptions while coming one dropped pass away from a postseason appearance.
