The Cincinnati Bengals officially signed reserve offensive tackle Fred Johnson on a one-year deal Tuesday morning. But, less than one hour after that signing went down, the 2021 Super Bowl runner-up cut him back into free agency.
Johnson was a restricted free agent and would’ve made more than $2 million in 2022. The Bengals made the decision to sign him prior to the start of this year’s free agency period, but the addition of star OT La’el Collins forced the team to reevaluate that decision.
Following his release, Johnson signed a new one-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Johnson suited up for the Bengals for the past three seasons after getting picked up as an undrafted free agent in 2019. He was a healthy scratch for much of the team’s 2021 campaign, appearing in five contests and starting one game. He started a career-high six games in 2020.
