The San Francisco 49ers quarterback competition could be heating up.
Jimmy Garoppolo is on track to start for the 49ers, though Trey Lance has reportedly been impressing in training camp. Lance showed some major promise in the 49ers’ preseason opener over the weekend, too.
Lance made one of the biggest plays of the weekend, connecting on an 80-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Trent Sherfield.
With Lance and Garoppolo battling for playing time, it would be natural for the latter quarterback to not be thrilled at the play. However, that was very much not the case.

That’s a good teammate.
Lance has spoken highly of his relationship with Garoppolo since arriving in San Francisco.
“He’s a great guy. I mean, one of the best people I’ve been around and I’ve been fortunate to be around some, I think, really really great people, guys that are going to play today and guys still in that locker room right now. Jimmy is just like it and that organization is the same exact way. So I just feel very blessed and fortunate to be where I am and be able to be a part of something like this. I’ve heard from other guys’ experiences and how we handled OTAs and things like that, our coaching staff and everyone that runs that organization does it at a really high level,” Lance told reporters earlier this summer.
The 49ers will continue their preseason schedule on Sunday against the Chargers.
