Phillies 3B Alec Bohm Is Having A Miserable Night In The Field

April 12, 2022 by The Spun

Alec Bohm will have a difficult time forgetting this game.

Three innings into Monday night’s game against the New York Mets, the Philadelphia Phillies hird baseman committed three throwing errors.

Jomboy Media’s Talkin’ Baseball provided clips of each blunder.

While Bohm might have been better off keeping the first soft grounder in his pocket, a big-league third baseman should have thrown out catcher James McCann with ease on the second miscue. Rhys Hoskins appeared to spare Bohm from a third error, but an on-field review overturned the call after the first baseman missed the tag off the bag.

Things could get even worse for Bohm. During the second inning, fans at Citizens Bank Park sarcastically cheered when he made a routine play.

Bohm appeared to express his disapproval of the home crowd.

ya, he’s definitely done in Philly after this if that lip reading is right. pic.twitter.com/mZlFlCSgCC

Bohm burst onto the scene by batting .338/.400/.481 in 180 plate appearances during the 2020 campaign. However, he hit just .247/.305/.342 the following year. While the 25-year-old still brandishes upside with his bat, he put his defensive viability in doubt by committing 15 errors in 103 games at third base last season.

While he’s had a brutal day on the field, Bohm has drawn a walk and hit a double in Monday’s first two plate appearances. He’s best suited as a designated hitter, but the same can be said about offseason signees, Nick Castellanos and Kyle Schwarber.

Bryson Stott, a natural shortstop, made the Phillies’ roster and started Opening Day at the hot corner. Following Bohm’s defensive debacle Monday night, he might lose significant playing time to the rookie moving forward.
