A lot has been written and said about the relationship between Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll and his now-former quarterback Russell Wilson leading up to Wilson’s trade to the Denver Broncos.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Carroll said that there was no issue with their relationship. He chalked the trade up to the Broncos up to the opportunity that Wilson had to play elsewhere.
“It wasn’t about relationship. It was about the opportunity,” Carroll said. “He was open to another chance… I think it intrigued him.”
That’s a bit of a non-answer on Carroll’s part. If Wilson was so eager for the other opportunity, a strong relationship with Carroll should have dissuaded him from leaving.

In their 10 years together, Pete Carroll and Russell Wilson went 104-53-1 in the regular season and 9-7 in the playoffs.
Together they won the Super Bowl in 2013 and made another one the following year. They made the playoffs eight times in 10 years.
But after the 2020 season there were reports of a growing rift between Wilson and the rest of the team. Nothing materialized in the 2021 offseason though. They went just 7-10 that year, and the Seahawks found themselves needing to rebuild.
With the makeup of their team and their limited draft capital, trading Wilson was one of the only ways they could get started.
It will be interesting to see what the Seahawks look like now that Wilson is gone for good.
