Mac Jones is starting to gain support from his teammates on the defensive side of the ball.
Jones entered fall camp well behind starting quarterback Cam Newton, but recent reports suggest the rookie is catching up in a hurry. The former Alabama star competed 13-of-19 for 146 yards in his latest preseason outing against the Philadelphia Eagles. Even Jones’ teammates on the defensive side of the ball are starting to take notice.
Patriots star linebacker Dont’a Hightower praised Jones at Thursday’s practice because of the rookie’s commitment to studying defenses. Jones has apparently been studying New England’s defense and its play calls to better prepare himself for practices. That type of preparation warrants attention.
Hightower is impressed with Jones’ work ethic, to say the least.
Dont’a Hightower said he recently found out Mac Jones has been studying the Patriots’ defensive plays on his own to better prepare himself. Said that’s something “not a lot of young guys would do.”

It’s starting to sound like Mac Jones is gaining support of most his teammates. If that’s the case, it’s only a matter of time before the rookie is the Patriots’ starting quarterback.
Make no mistake, though. Veteran quarterback Cam Newton has played very well during the preseason and has shown great command of New England’s offense. The former NFL MVP completed eight of his nine pass attempts for 103 yards and a touchdown against the Eagles last weekend.
Chances are the Patriots move ahead with Newton as the starter and won’t make a change unless Newton’s play warrants it. But it has to feel good knowing Jones looks more than capable of running New England’s offense as soon as this year.
The Patriots play in their final preseason game of the year this Sunday, Aug. 29 against the New York Giants.
