Heading into the 2021 season, the New England Patriots have some significant depth on the defensive line. And ahead of Tuesday’s final 53-man roster deadline, that depth has reportedly attracted some potential trade partners.
According to reports from Sports Illustrated’s NFL insider Albert Breer, the Pats are considering trades for two DL options: Akeem Spence and Montravius Adams.
“The Patriots have solicited interest in their defensive line depth, with Akeem Spence and Montravius Adams emerging as names that could be dealt,” Breer wrote on Monday morning.
Adams spent the first four years of his NFL career as a backup for the Green Bay Packers before signing with the Patriots earlier this offseason. Spence, a nine-year veteran, was a former starter for Tampa Bay, Detroit and Miami before bouncing around the league and landing in New England midway through the 2020 season (nine tackles through six games with the Pats).
Both Adams and Spence have served as backup defensive tackle options so far throughout the preseason. Longtime Pats starter Lawrence Guy and former Dolphin Davon Godchaux are the projected starters in 2021.
The Patriots, along with every other team in the league, will be forced to cut their roster down to 53 by 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday.
