New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton was a noticeable absence from training camp today. But it doesn’t look like he’ll be gone long.
On Monday, the Patriots released a statement on Newton’s absence. They announced that he will be out of camp until Thursday due to a “misunderstanding about (COVID-19) tests conducted away from NFL facilities.”
“On Saturday, Cam Newton traveled to a Club-approved medical appointment that required him to leave the New England area. He received daily COVID tests, which were all negative. Due to a misunderstanding about tests conducted away from NFL facilities, and as required by the NFL-NFLPA protocols, Cam will be subject to the five-day entry cadence process before returning to the facility. Cam will continue participating virtually in team activities and return to the club facility on Thursday, August 26.”
The five-day absence period is standard for those who are unvaccinated against COVID-19. Had he been vaccinated, he would have been allowed to return sooner.

Newton is currently the Patriots’ designated starting quarterback, but his absence could open the door for rookie Mac Jones to impress this week. Fans are already speculating as much in the comments:
“The opening Mac needed… Cam is about to be Drew Bledsoe’d,” one fan wrote.
“Mac szn,” wrote another.
“A lot more 1st team reps for Mac,” another fan said in a retweet.
The Patriots’ final preseason game is this coming Sunday against the New York Giants.
