Cam Newton is unable to rejoin the New England Patriots for a few days due to a “misunderstanding” about virus testing. But the Patriots had absolutely no problem going through practice without him – under the leadership of rookie Mac Jones.
On Wednesday’s edition of ESPN’s Get Up, Patriots insider Mike Reiss summed up today’s practice in three words. “I can sum it up in three words: Mac. Jones. Show,” Reiss said off the bat.
Reiss explained that Jones dominated practice today while getting all of the first-team reps. He was on target with most of his throws, and showed confidence in the face of the Patriots’ first-team defense.
This week marks the first time all training camp that Jones has gotten the majority of first-team reps. He’s been solid if unremarkable in the preseason, completing over 68-percent of his passes with no interceptions, but no touchdowns either.

“Mac Jones show.”

The New England Patriots have had Cam Newton penciled in as their starter for the better part of a month. But with the way things are going in Patriots practice now, Newton could be on the verge of losing his starting job.
Mac Jones was selected in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft after a sensational 2020 season at Alabama. The initial plan was likely to let him ride the bench as a rookie.
But if Jones continues practicing like this and dominates in his final preseason game (assuming he plays), Bill Belichick may alter his plans and give his rookie the starting job.
What are your thoughts on the Patriots quarterback situation right now?
