During a press conference on Friday, Carolina Panthers GM Scott Fitterer named Sam Darnold as the team’s lead candidate to take the starting quarterback position in 2022.
But, the Panthers could have another QB option returning this season.
Fitterer says the “door’s still open” for Cam Newton to sign with the team.
“The thing with Cam is it’s got to be a fit for us and it’s got to be a fit for him just as well,” Fitterer said. “He’s looking for a certain opportunity. And the door’s still open for us. We’re very open to Cam. We’ll see where it goes. He knows where we stand. I think he and Matt [Rhule] had a really good conversation, from my understanding. So we’ll just see where it goes.”
Midway through the 2021 season, the Panthers brought in Newton to replace an injured Sam Darnold. While the move to welcome the fan-favorite QB home to Carolina was immensely popular, it didn’t exactly pan out on the field.
In the five games that Newton started, the Panthers went 0-5. The former league MVP completed 55% of his passes for 684 yards, four touchdowns and five interception, and logged 230 yards and five touchdowns on the ground.
As of right now, the Panthers’ QB depth chart consists of Sam Darnold and P.J. Walker.
In addition to the option of signing a veteran QB like Newton, the Carolina organization could also draft a young signal caller with the No. 6 overall pick in this year’s draft.
