The San Diego Padres are looking to make a huge splash right before Opening Day. According to Hector Gomez of Z101 Digital, the team is “showing a lot of interest” in Cleveland Guardians third baseman Jose Ramirez.
Ramirez has discussed a contract extension with Cleveland this offseason, but those talks have stalled.
Pulling off a blockbuster trade within the next 24-48 hours will be tough. However, the Padres could put together an intriguing package for the Guardians.
As for Ramirez’ potential fit in San Diego’s infield, he has the versatility to play multiple positions. More importantly, he’d give the Padres’ lineup a player coming off a season with a .266 average and 36 homers.

Guardians manager Terry Francona recently discussed the trade rumors surrounding Ramirez. It certainly sounds like the three-time All-Star is unfazed by all the noise.
“Jose has been fine. He’s always fine,” Francona said, via Cleveland.com. “He loves playing baseball. Last night that game was starting to drag a little bit. He was the one guy who wanted to stay and get that fourth at-bat even though everyone else had come out of the game.”
We’ll see if the Padres can find a way to acquire Ramirez before Opening Day.
