Packers President Makes Opinion On Jordan Love Clear

April 12, 2022 by The Spun

Jordan Love in his preseason debut at the Houston Texans v Green Bay Packers game.

A long saga ended with Aaron Rodgers re-signing with the Green Bay Packers for a three-year, $150 million deal. That complicates Jordan Love’s status with the organization.

The first-round pick has spent the last two years watching Rodgers win two MVP awards. Love has made one start in his NFL career, and the Packers won’t want him adding to that tally in 2022.

Does Green Bay still view him as the heir apparent capable of replicating Rodgers’ career trajectory?

Packers CEO Mark Murphy discussed the young quarterback with Packast’s Tom Grossi (h/t Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk). Though Love certainly won’t be fighting for a starting job, Murphy said summer reps will be vital to his development.

“I think this preseason is important for him,” Murphy said. “We think he can be a good player, but we haven’t really seen enough. So I think this preseason will be good for him.”

Murphy defended the franchise’s decision to trade up and select Love with pick No. 26 despite already rostering a superstar signal-caller.

“He’s a talented player,” Murphy said of Love. “I know the decision to draft him has been questioned by a number of people, but it’s such an important position in our league that investing future assets at the quarterback position. . . . They said the same thing when we drafted Aaron.”

Murphy drew the parallel to Rodgers sitting out three years before replacing Brett Favre under center. While the back-to-back MVP is still on top of his game, Murphy acknowledged that Rodgers is likely determining his playing status as “a year-by-year thing now.”

While something will have to go wrong for Love to get meaningful reps in games that count, Murphy said it’s “up to Jordan to take advantage of the opportunities that he does have.”
