Pac-12 Game Reportedly Canceled Hours Before Kickoff

December 12, 2020 by The Spun Leave a Comment

The Washington State Cougars take the field against the Oregon State Beavers in a Pac-12 football game.

The Pac-12 came into the weekend with one game already cancelled. Make that two following the latest news surrounding Cal at Washington State.

Saturday’s Cal-Wazzu game was cancelled Saturday afternoon (less than two hours from the kickoff time). Yes, that means the Golden Bears traveled all the way to Pullman only for the game to be cancelled.

It’s highly unusual for a game to get cancelled so close to kickoff. According to college football insider Bruce Feldman, the Golden Bears were down to just two defensive lineman.

This is Cal’s third game of the season that’s gotten cancelled. The Golden Bears’s early-season games against Washington and Arizona State were also cancelled.

Whoa. Less than 2 hours before kickoff. https://t.co/0VlpNegHcL

This is another unfortunate development within the Pac-12, though it won’t make much of an impact in the standings.

Washington at Oregon was supposed to take place on Saturday. The game’s winner would’ve won the North title and gone on to play in the Pac-12 Championship game. The Huskies suffered a team-wide virus outbreak, though, and were forced to cancel the game.

Washington is now, by default, the North champion meaning if the Huskies are healthy by next week they’ll play for the conference title.

If Washington can’t play, the conference has several options. It could send the North’s runner-up (Oregon) to meet the South champion. Or, the Pac-12 could scrap the divisions and send USC and Colorado to the title game (both teams being deserving of playing for the conference title).

Cal, meanwhile, will now make its way back to Northern California after cancelling on Wazzu.
