Ohio State Football Player Announces Medical Retirement

August 19, 2021 by The Spun Leave a Comment

Ohio State players run onto the field before a game in September.

On Thursday morning, it was reported that Ohio State backup long snapper Roen McCullough is no longer with the program. Just a few moments ago, McCullough revealed why he’s leaving the Buckeyes.

McCullough has decided to medically retire from football because of a heart condition he was diagnosed with last year and a shoulder injury he recently suffered. He explained his whole situation in a lengthy post on Twitter.

“I’ve decided to medically retire from playing football,” McCullough announced on Twitter. “After being diagnosed with a heart condition in late 2020, I was able to be cleared in time to play linebacker in our spring game.

“This summer, I busted ass to get my weight and strength up for this new position, while working a job throughout the week and weekends. Unfortunately, I tore my shoulder up pretty bad during one of my shifts – requiring surgery.”

Even though this is a really unfortunate situation for McCullough, he remains upbeat about his future.

“It’s been a long, hard process but necessary in the long run,” McCullough wrote. “Putting this situation in God’s hands and trusting that his plans far supersede any I have made for myself.”

McCullough joined the Buckeyes as a walk-on in 2018. He was expected to be the backup long snapper this season since Bradley Robinson remains on the roster.

While this is obviously a sad day for McCullough, the amount of support he’s receiving from the Ohio State community should help him get through this tough time.
